Summer Focus: Getting Healthier in 2011

Low-cost summer nutrition and health classes offered by Cornell can help you focus on getting healthier!

For many of us, summer is a time to focus on getting healthier, losing weight and improving our eating habits.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County is offering health and nutrition classes all summer long. Want to learn to make your own baby food? How to dine out and still eat healthy? Preserve and can your own food? We have classes for every interest.

 Below is the schedule of our classes or learn more at http://www.ccesuffolk.org. All classes are held at our Griffing Avenue office in Riverhead. Pre-registration is required.

Healthy Living Series

  • August 3: The Best and Worst of Eating Out. Review menus and discuss healthier options.
  • August 10: Diabetes Defense. Learn how to control the risk of diabetes.
  •  August 17: Secrets of Successful Weight Loss. Learn about successful weight loss techniques.
  •  August 24: Basics of Healthy Eating. Tips on grocery shopping, portion size and meal ideas.
  •  August 31: Written and Hidden Messages on Food Labels. Learn how to interpret labels on packaging and in ads.

Summer Nutrition Series

  • Eating Right When Money is Tight. July 7 or July 14. 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Learn to eat healthier on a limited budget. Call 631-727-7850, ext. 374 to register. $5 per class.
  • Preparing Your Own Baby Food. July 21, August 11, or September 8. 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. You will learn how to safely prepare and store homemade baby food and gain a better understanding of infants’ dietary needs. Call 631-727-7850, ext. 384 to register. $5 per class.
  • Food Allergies. August 5 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. or September 29 from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Participants will learn the difference between a food allergy and a food reaction and how to manage dangerous food allergies. Call 631-727-7850, ext. 355 to register.
  • Preserving it right! August 18 or August 25. 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Learn the basics to home canning and preserving a variety of fruits and vegetables from your home garden and/or local farm stand. $20 per class (includes supplies) Call 631-727-7850, ext. 356 to register.
