HAMPTON BAYS, NY — The Hampton Bays Fire Department rushed to the scene Monday afternoon after a fiery single-vehicle crash on Sunrise Highway.

According to the Hampton Bays Fire Department, the fully involved vehicle fire broke out in the eastbound lane of Sunrise Highway just west of Exit 65. Firefighters in heavy rescue engines quickly had the blaze under control, officials said.

The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was able to get out, but needed to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Fire police maintained the scene for safety and kept Sunrise Highway closed while the Suffolk County Police Department helicopter was in the middle of the highway.
