Happy Ending For Blind Dog Rescued From Drug-Ridden Neighborhood

Gizmo got his happily ever after and went home with his forever family this weekend.

CALVERTON, NY — Every dog has his day and it was a banner weekend for Gizmo, a blind shelter dog who was rescued from a drug-ridden neighborhood, where he'd been attacked by another animal.

"Many thanks to all who donated to help Gizmo," said Pam Green, executive director of the Kent Animal Shelter in Riverhead. "You may remember the story of Gizmo, who had sustained the loss of one eye after being attacked by another dog and trauma to the other eye as well. Unfortunately, Gizmo lost the second eye and is now completely blind."

However, she continued, the story ends happily. "Gizmo was adopted by a wonderful family and as you can see, he has some new friends to live with, as well. We are told he is learning how to navigate the stairs with help. Janese and John Giamundo welcomed Gizmo into their home this past weekend."

The Kent Animal Shelter reached out to help the dog who was attacked and left blind after being forced to live in a doghouse.

"Gizmo was rescued in horrific condition from a neighborhood of drugs and despair. He had been attacked by another dog, a pit bull, that was trained for fighting. In the attack, he lost his left eye and his right eye was badly damaged, leaving him with little or no sight," she said.

Because of the trauma, Gizmo developed a condition, entropion, which caused the eyelid to turn in, causing the lashes to continually scratch the eye, Green said; Gizmo needed surgery to correct the condition and help end his pain.

"We're happy to report that Gizmo has had his special surgery, and he is in recovery," she said.

A GoFundMe was set up to help with Gizmo's medical expenses.
