In Season: Watermelons and Cantaloupes Come in From the Fields
Bell peppers, peaches and eggplant are also this week's freshest picks.

Watermelon and cantaloupe are the two big stars of this week's freshest crop, as many farm stands across Baiting Hollow and the North Fork are offering these summer staples.
Gwen Gajeski of Northville Farms on Sound Avenue in Riverhead said the field-grown watermelons and cantaloupes had just come in fresh this week, along with peaches and potatoes.
Schmitt's Farmstand, in Laurel had watermelon earlier in the week, but Debbie Schmitt, operator of the stand, said that she had already sold out of her stock on Tuesday.

"We'll be picking more now for the weekend, hopefully," she said. Her baby bok choy has also been a popular seller through the summer.

"These tomatoes," said owner Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, pointing to a box of tiny vegetables, "we picked this morning."
The only farm stand polled without watermelon was Briermere Farm on Sound Avenue. However, they offered delicious white tangerines instead, fresh from the field this week.
