Luna, Lost Dog in Flanders, Home Safe On Friday

The dog just appeared at the front door early Friday morning, her foster mom said, adding that now she'll adopt Luna forever.

RIVERHEAD, NY - It's been a week of happy endings for lost dogs on the East End. Luna, a lost dog from Flanders, is home safe and sound.

"OMG, Luna just appeared at our back door," her overjoyed foster mom, Linda Ouderkirk-Rempe‎, wrote on Facebook early Friday morning, five days after her beloved pet went missing.

Luna had taken off chasing a deer on Saturday; she lives on Pleasure Drive in Flanders, close to the Route 24 end of Pleasure Drive, she said.

"She seems okay , she's tired and a little skinny. She doesn't have her jacket on. I got up because I couldn't sleep I was so worried about her. I went down to turn the back door light off — it's a light that I usually don't leave on, but I have been since she's been missing — sat down got on my computer then I heard whining. And there she was at the back door like nothing ever happened."

She added, "I'm literally still in shock."

Luna will have a visit to the Shinnecock Animal Hospital today to make sure all is well, Ouderkirk-Rempe said.

Luna's disappearance will lead to her forever home: "The funny thing is, she was my foster. But now we're going to adopt her. We were on the fence about adopting her but now I know she's home," Ouderkirk-Rempe said.

Turning to social media after Luna took off, Ouderkirk-Rempe created the "Help Us Bring Luna Home" Facebook page, to spread the word, explaining that the dog had on an orange Jacket, a multi-colored collar and was microchipped.

The joyful reunion was the second this week to make headlines: On Monday, Jazzy, a missing dog from Southold who united a town as they searched, was found and brought home to her loving family. A "Jazzy party" was held Wednesday in her honor, to celebrate her homecoming and to thank the many who searched tirelessly for days until she was found, eight days after she disappeared.
