Man Trapped In Sand After Cesspool Collapse Home From Hospital
Two men were initially trapped but one was able to free himself before help arrived, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY —A man trapped in sand after a cesspool collapse in Riverhead Friday is home from the hospital, police said.
According to the Riverhead Police Department, the incident took place at 3:01 Friday on Aj Ct. off Doctors Path; a caller reported that, while installing a new septic system on a construction site, two men were trapped by falling sand in the newly dug hole.
One of the men was able to free himself before help arrived, police said. The second was trapped in waist-deep sand, but was freed with the assistance of numerous members of various fire departments, police departments, and ambulances companies that responded, police said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, was notified and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
