Police: Mastic Man Arrested for Riverhead, Jamesport Bank Robberies
The man was arrested Wednesday for the robberies that occurred in December and January, police say.

Police arrested a Mastic man on Wednesday for two recent robberies of Capital One banks in Jamesport and Riverhead, according to Riverhead Town Police.
John Gayles, 55, was charged with two counts of third degree robbery, police said.

The first robbery occurred Dec. 16 at the Capital One Bank located at 140 East Main Street in Riverhead.

The second robbery occurred on Jan. 6 at the Capital One Bank located 1491 Main Road in Jamesport.
In both robberies, Gayles entered the bank wearing a hooded sweatshirt, gloves and sunglasses and handed the teller a note demanding money, police said.

He was developed as a suspect shortly after the Jamesport robbery and was taken into custody on an outstanding parole warrant on Jan. 8, according to police.
He remained in jail on that warrant while the investigation continued, police said.
On Wednesday, he was processed on the robbery charges and arraigned in Riverhead Justice Court before judge Allen M. Smith, police said.
He was found non-eligible for bail due to his prior criminal history and remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, according to police.
