Riverhead High School Director Receives 2014 Zone Award

The high school's director received the honor at the 2014 Anne Mackey Awards Banquet.

Bill Groth, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, was recently named a 2014 Zone Award recipient at the New York State Council of Administrators for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance during the 2014 Anne Mackey Awards Banquet in Verona, NY.

Groth has demonstrated this leadership and vision through actions evidenced with the “Wave to Wave” mentoring program, implemented an elementary school/dental hygiene program and “Heartlinks Project” with Stony Brook University, while facilitating a New York State Education Child Nutrition Department grant.

In 2013, under Groth’s leadership the Riverhead Physical education department was granted the first “Project Fit America” award in New York State to reverse the lack of fitness in youth.

His dedication to physical health education advancement is noted with his teamwork and volunteering with the PEHPC (Physical Ed. and Health Professional Certification Programs), in addition to leading his district in successfully receiving a $425,000 Partner in Education Corporate grant/award.

Groth also worked with technology to design and develop the W.O.W. physical activity/classroom break to address the obesity crisis, while promoting the benefits of activity, and was selected by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services award as having “exceptional health and wellness programs.”
