Riverhead Town Fire Marshal Resigns

Supervisor Sean Walter said he will conduct interviews to replace Scott Davonski, who is leaving the position for a job "closer to home"

Riverhead Town Chief Fire Marshall Scott Davonski has resigned, the town announced at a public work session on Thursday.

Supervisor Sean Walter said Davonski, who has served as chief fire marshal since he was appointed in a split vote in 2007, submitted his letter of resignation to "take another job to keep him closer to home."

Davonski, of East Quogue, had previously served as assistant chief fire marshal in Southampton Town, and is currently the second assistant chief of the East Quogue Fire Department, according to the fire district website.

Walter said the town will conduct interviews with the three people from Riverhead who passed a new fire marshal test in October. The final list of eligible candidates won't be approved until April, town officials said, but the town can hire a resident on a provisional basis until then.

Walter added he would like Riverhead Fire District Commissioner Dennis Hamill to sit in on the interviews.

"I'd like to have someone from the largest fire district in the town be part of these interviews because Riverhead Fire District is going to be interacting with [the new fire marshal] more than anybody on the town board," Walter said.
