Search On For Thief Who Crashed Stolen Car: Police

The car was stolen from a parking lot near a Riverhead hotel before crashing early Saturday, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY— A stolen car was involved in a Riverhead crash early Saturday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town Police, the incident took place at 2:32 a.m.; authorities received a report regarding a single-car crash involving a 2017 Kia Sorento on Northville Turnpike near Oliver Street, police said.

The driver fled the scene, police said. A description of a person possibly involved was given as a white male with a husky build, wearing a white shirt, and walking north on Oliver Street away from the crash scene, police said.

Upon further investigation is was determined that prior to the crash, the 2017 Kia was stolen from the parking lot located at the intersection of East Main Street and Ostrander Avenue, across the street from the Hyatt Place Hotel on East Main Street, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division was notified and responded to the scene.
