Baseball

The Carleton College baseball team opened its Tucson, AZ series on the 15th, as they swept Ozark Christian College, out of Joplin, MO. in a double header. First baseman Kiyota Gomi (Dobbs Ferry-Ardsley '08) had a big day, as in the first game, he had 2-5 in batting, scored 2 runs, and had 2 putouts, prior to his taking over the pitching chores for the final 2 innings, where in he allowed no runs, no hits, and walked 2 batters in the 12-0 win.

In game 2, an 11-5 win, he went 1-2, scored 2 runs, had 1 r.b.i, drew 2 passes, and made 7 putouts at first base. Facing Luther of Decorah, Iowa there on the 18th, in the 4-3 loss, Gomi had no hits, gained first on a fielder's choice, and subsequently scored a run in the 3 run first inning.

In a 10-2 loss to Coast Guard on the 14th, Alex Pezzuto (Hastings '10) of Johnson and Wales, the shortstop, batted 1-4, had 1 sacrifice fly, walked once, and was caught stealing in the game. In a twin bill with Wentworth on the 17th, in a double win, he went hitless, had an r.bi., and 1 assist in the 2-0 blanking, and then in the 2nd game, a 6-1 victory , he batted 1-2 , had 1 r.b.i., made 1 put out, and had 2 assists in this one.

In an 11-7 loss to Emory on the 13th, starting southpaw hurler Mike Swerdloff (Ardsley '09) of Brandeis, pitched the first two innings, during which time he gave up 4 runs on 4 hits, and his nine down, 4-0. A 6-run rally later in the game by the Judges put the team ahead, and thereby relieved him of any decision in the contest.

On the 15th, he was the winning pitcher against Case-Western Reserve, as he pitched 8.1 innings, wherein he gave up 3 runs on 8 hits, and struck out 3 batters. With his nine down 3-2, going into the bottom of the 8th, they rallied for 2 runs and they held the foe back, to gain the win. With Rochester on the 16th, in the role of designated hitter, he was 0-1, walked once, and had 1 steal in the 6-4 loss.

The Mercy College baseball team picked up its first two wins of the season against Franklin Pierce today (March 18) in their final Florida doubleheader.

Softball Splits

The Mercy College softball team had its 2012 home opener today (March 18) and split a doubleheader against non-conference opponent Holy Family University. Mercy won the first game, 10-0 in five innings, and lost Game Two, 8-3. Freshman Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn.) racked up seven RBI on the day.
