Irvington Eighth-Graders Explore Outdoors at O’Hara Nature Center

The students put to use what they had learned in science classes.

Irvington, NY — Irvington Middle School students explored nature, learned about animals and composting, and practiced yoga during the annual eighth-grade field trip to the O’Hara Nature Center recently.

In small groups, they rotated through six hands-on stations and reflected on a variety of topics they had studied as part of the science curriculum, according to a spokesman for the district.

The eighth-graders visited the honeybee station learned about beekeeping and to taste local honey. They learned more about native animals during a presentation on them, and some had a chance to touch a snake.

The eighth-graders also learned about composting and went on a nature hike to explore different types of trees.

As part of the compass skills and geocaching station, the students learned about the outdoor recreational game, or modern-day treasure hunt, known as geocaching. They also worked with a yoga instructor to learn and practice different yoga poses.

At the end of the day, the students gathered at the middle school campus to have some fresh fruit, snacks and burgers during the annual eighth-grade barbecue.
