📰 News we're reading

1. New affordable housing development opens in Rochester (13wham.com) — A new $38.7 million affordable housing complex, True North Apartments on Central Avenue, is now open in Rochester and taking applications for its 70 units. Designed with Upper Falls neighborhood input, the development pairs permanent housing with an on-site wellness clinic and supportive services through local partners, aiming to stabilize residents who need both a home and ongoing care.

2. The woman building relationships at City Hall (wxxinews.org) — At Rochester City Hall, advisor Daniella Veras quietly orchestrates the mayor's schedule, events, and community relationships, helping his office connect more deeply with residents. A first-generation Dominican American who grew up in Rochester, she draws on her multicultural background, language skills, and behind-the-scenes "invisible labor" to build bridges, especially with the city's Hispanic community.

3. Lollypop Farm cuts dog adoption fees for October (13wham.com) — Dog lovers in the Rochester area can adopt with lower costs all October, as Lollypop Farm cuts fees by half for dogs 7 months to 6 years and waives them entirely for older dogs. Every adopted dog is vetted, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and comes with free virtual training support, with appointments required Friday through Monday.

4. Rochester Police Foundation's 'United in Service' fundraiser raises over $50,000 (whec.com) — A packed fundraiser at the Strathallan Hotel on East Avenue brought in more than $50,000 for the Rochester Police Foundation, supporting community programs officers can't fund through their regular budget. Guests enjoyed live music from Claudia Hoyser while helping pay for efforts like new wellness dogs that will boost morale for officers and staff at the station.

5. Rochester cricket clubs look for second pitch (rochesterfirst.com) — Cricket players in the Rochester area are wrapping up their season and pushing for a badly needed second pitch beyond Genesee Valley Park, currently the only local cricket field. The Rochester Greens Cricket Club, which practices at Roth Junior High in Rush-Henrietta, is urging more municipal support and inviting new players to join practices ahead of the 2027 season.
