Burns Family in "Viewpoints: Art of the Portrait" Show at Shelter Rock Public Library

The “Viewpoints- Art of the Portrait” show features a contemporary realist exhibit of artists with their inspiration, teacher Dan Slapo, Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America. South Hempstead residents, the Burns family, who include mom Kathy and daughters Colleen and Keely are in the show. Also exhibiting are Nicole Adamonis, Suzie Alvey, Andrea Attias, Christine Ballow, Peggy Bayern, Joe Leonardo, Sieglinde Lubbers, Bob Lubbers, Nadine McCluskey, Pat Quinn, Dan Slapo, Ted Scholl and Theodora Zavala. The show opens Thursday, April 26th. The show runs for two months, during May and June, through Tuesday, June 26th at the Shelter Rock Library. It can be viewed during regular library hours in the Gallery. 

“Viewpoints” contains work in oil paint, acrylic paint, charcoal and pastel. Each artist has a unique viewpoint, both in realistic style and angle from which they are rendering their portrait from life.  Although they work from the same models, each artist has his or her own technique.

The artists will be available with a “Meet-the-Artist” Reception on Sunday, May 6th in the Gallery, 2pm- 4pm. The public is invited to this free event. Delicious hors d’ oeuvres & desserts for will be served.

Kathy Burns is an artist living in South Hempstead, not far from where she graduated from Oceanside High School in 1980. She then graduated from Molloy College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She is now in the process of getting her Masters in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University online. She is scheduled to graduate next June. Kathy's specialty is portraits in oils and pastels, although she works in all mediums. Burns feels she's learned a great deal from Slapo.

Colleen Burns graduated from South Side High School in Rockville Centre, Class of 2009. She is currently attending the Academy of Art University in the undergraduate program for a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Colleen enjoys working in charcoal, oils and pastels with her favorite subject being animals, especially horses.

Keely is a student at Southside High School who enjoys art.
