NYPD Officer From Long Island Dragged By Car Remains In Critical Condition

The officer managed to shoot the teenage driver in the face, finally stopping the car.

The NYPD officer from Long Island who was dragged by a car for two and a half blocks in East Flatbush late Saturday night is still in critical condition, authorities say. The officer, 35-year-old Dalsh Veve, of North Baldwin, shot the teenage driver of the car in the face, causing him to crash.

Veve is a nine-year veteran of the NYPD. According to the New York Times, he was an immigrant from Haiti. He and his wife have a 2-year-old daughter.

"He represents the American dream – an immigrant child came here, joined the greatest police force in the country, and has been an exemplary officer. And, right now, he is fighting to survive," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday. "Commissioner O’Neill and I spent time with his wife at his bedside, and her strength was clear, and her pain was clear as well."

According to police, Veve was talking to several people sitting inside a black Honda Sedan that was parked in front of a fire hydrant. The NYPD had received a call for shots fired in the area, but it turned out to just be fireworks in celebration of a nearby wedding. Three officers who were speaking to several other people then saw Veve being dragged by the sedan on Tilden Avenue. The car continued to drive on Tilden before taking a right on East 53rd Street, dragging Veve for two and a half blocks before he fell on the street.

The car crashed and was abandoned, police said. It was recently reported stolen in Valley Stream.

At a press conference Sunday, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said that Veve managed to shoot his gun twice, striking the 15-year-old driver of the car in the face, according to Newsday. The teen's identity has not been released, and he is in stable condition.

The 15-year-old has a long list of previous offenses, including robbery and larceny, according to NBC. He is likely to be charged in connection with the attack on Veve.

In addition, NBC reported that two women from Brooklyn — Eboni Clinton, 19, and Jeronda Oliver, 18 — were charged with hindering prosecution.
