Teacher's Aide From Seaford School Sues Nassau County For False Arrest

She was charged with abusing a special-needs child in her care, but those charges were quickly dropped.

A teacher's aide from a school for children with special needs is suing Nassau County for a false arrest after a case against her was thrown out by a judge.

Alexandra Chmil, a Garden City resident who works at the Hagedorn Little Village School in Seaford, was arrested last January after a mother of a student there said she saw her daughter's face was bruised. After watching a security camera from the room, the mother claimed that Chmil had violently jerked the girl's head and aggressively wiped her face, causing redness and bruising.

The charges were dismissed, and Chmil has no criminal record.

Now, she is suing Nassau County in federal court, according to Newsday. The suite claims that she was strip-searched for no reason, and that police ignored video evidence showing she did nothing wrong.

"This conscience-shocking failure to investigate obvious and known exculpatory evidence deprived Ms. Chmil of her liberty in violation of the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments," the lawsuit said, according to Newsday.
