Teacher's Aide 'Violently' Shook Disabled Girl: Police

A 25-year-old former teacher’s aide accused of “violently jerking” a disabled child’s head, causing her injuries, surrendered herself to police Friday morning.

According to authorities, a 39-year-old mother first noticed that her 9-year-old daughter with special needs returned home from the Hagedorn Little Village School, located at 750 Hicksville Road in Seaford, with redness and swelling on her face on May 1, 2015.

The mother took her daughter to a physician the next day after she noticed her daughter’s face was bruising.

On May 11, 2015, the mother was able to view a video that showed a teacher’s aide, identified as Alexandra Chmil of Garden City, violently jerking the girl’s head and harshly wiping her face with paper towels, police said.

Chmil, who resigned from her position in June 2015, officially surrendered herself to Second Precinct Detectives in Woodbury on Friday at 8:40 a.m.

Hagedorn Little Village School released the following statement regarding this incident:

“We were distressed to learn that a former Teacher’s Aide at our school may have turned herself into the police. We treated this matter very seriously and took all appropriate action when we learned of the allegations. We will cooperate fully with the authorities. Since opening in 1969, Hagedorn Little Village School has had an impeccable reputation and it is of the utmost importance to us to protect the well-being, safety and privacy of our students.”

Chmil was charged with first degree endangering the welfare of a disabled person. She was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Friday.
