5 Things About Town: Swing Out at Rye Town Park

Here’s a look at the upcoming events in and around Rye this week, including the latest in music, dance, library and theater happenings.

Monday

Musical Theatre Workshop called “Newsies” gives show-biz wannabes ages 8-through-13 an opportunity to learn lines, choreography and staging in one week at . Tuesday

Finale of ’s free Summer Band Twilight Tuesdays Concert Series takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the south pavilion at 7:30 p.m. when the Port Chester-based Angelo Rubino Orchestra starts playing for your listening and dancing pleasure ‘til 9 p.m.

Rubino has been around long enough to know it don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing. He and his band have been bringing that Big Band swing-era sound to Westchester and Fairfield ballroom, hotel and other venues for more than 35 years now.

Rubino is lead singer as well as a saxophone player in a six-member band that also includes a drummer, guitar player, keyboard/bass player, another sax player, and Angelo’s daughter Ann as lead female vocalist. Band performs a wide range of musical styles from the 1940s to the 90's.

’s naturalists run an end-of-summer Back to School Vacation Camp today through Wednesday from 10 a,m. to 2 p.m. for youngsters grades pre-Kindergarten through 4. Each day features a different nature lesson and includes craft time, hiking, games and water play. Program continues Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1, same time, same place. Information: 967-5150.

’s One World, Many Stories Summer Reading Program Family Fun Nights head for a yummy Ice Cream Sundae Grand Finale at 6 p.m. in the library. Last licks celebratory program rewards kids, ages four and up, for all the reading they’ve done over the summer by allowing participants to make an ice cream treat with all the fixings.
