Blind Brook Student Wins Lions Club Peace Poster District Contest

RYE BROOK, NY —The Lions Club announced that Blake Goldstein, from Blind Brook Middle School, has won the Lions District 20R2 Peace Poster Contest, which took place in November.

Goldstein's poster will be entered into the NYS competition in mid-December, and might then move on to the international levels, with a winner announced at a United Nations event in the spring.

The district win follows his winning the local Port Chester/Rye Brook Lions competition on Nov. 12 from all entries from the Blind Brook Middle School.

Nina Heery of Rye Neck Middle School was the District runner-up.

Lions District 20R2 includes 35 clubs in lower Westchester, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island.

The Lions International Peace Poster Contest is an annual worldwide competition for children ages 11-13, encouraging them to express their vision of world peace through art, based on a particular theme. This year’s theme was "Lead With Compassion."

Port Chester & Rye Brook Lions members are affiliated with the Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Club, which is working to bring Lions resources to the needs of the community, with the intent to establish a self-operating Port Chester/Rye Brook Lions Club.

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions annually sponsor the local competition with the communities' middle schools. This year included The French American, Hommocks, Rye Neck & Saints John & Paul Middle Schools. LM Lions supported the local Port Chester/Rye Brook competition for the Blind Brook & Port Chester Middle Schools.

The LM Lions thanked Christy Sanchez, art teacher at Blind Brook Middle School, for her efforts to bring the contest to the community and provide her students with the opportunity to share their visions of peace.

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions, who will be celebrating their Centennial in 2023, focus on supporting existing non-profit and community service groups by bringing community service leaders together to determine needs, solutions and resources. The LM Lions are part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization of nearly 1.5 million members. The Lions' signature cause is vision/blindness, along with hunger, the environment, diabetes, childhood cancer and the future of youth. They are signatories of the United Nations resolutions on women’s and refugee rights, and are currently active in Afghanistan & Ukrainian refugee resettlement.
