Car Theft Suspect In Rye Arrested After Car Chase, Foot Pursuit

Rather than pulling over, the driver fled northbound on Boston Post Rd. at high speed, according to officials.

RYE, NY — A tense situation during the morning rush hour commute ended safely thanks to quick action and cooperation between neighboring jurisdictions.

On Thursday, just after 8 a.m. the City of Rye Police Department received an alert about a stolen car traveling in the city. The white Volkswagen Jetta had earlier been reported stolen out of New Haven on Super Bowl Sunday.

An officer spotted the reported stolen car on Purdy Ave. and attempted to make a traffic stop, but rather than pulling over, the driver fled northbound on the Boston Post Rd. at high speed, according to officials. Officers from the City of Rye and the Village of Port Chester continued the chase, which ended on Midland Ave. after a brief foot pursuit.

The driver was identified as Shyheim Mcquillar of New Haven, Connecticut. The 20-year-old was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful fleeing of an officer in a vehicle and reckless driving.

He was arraigned in Rye City Court and ordered to be held at the Westchester County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1,500 cash. Mcquillar's next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 20.

City of Rye police thanked the Port Chester Police Department and the Westchester County Police Department for helping to end a potentially dangerous situation safely.
