The rift between scientific sexology and psychoanalysis has led to a lack of knowledge about sexual functioning among psychodynamic clinicians. In this talk, Dr. Mark Blechner will describe guidelines for working with sexual issues in psychoanalytic therapy. Especially with patients who present with atypical sexual configurations, it is important for the therapist to learn as much as possible from first- person accounts. Examples of common missteps in such work will be explored.

Mark J. Blechner, Ph.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the William Alanson White Institute, and faculty and supervisor at the New York University Post-Doctoral Program in Psychoanalysis. He has published three books: Sex Changes: Transformations in Society and Psychoanalysis, (Routledge, 2009, also available on Kindle), The Dream Frontier (Routledge, 2001) and Hope and Mortality: Psychodynamic Approaches to AIDS and HIV (Analytic Press, 1997). He is Editor Emeritus of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis, on the editorial boards of Studies in Gender and Sexuality and The Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, and is a member of the Neuro-Psychoanalysis Study Group at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the author of 10 book chapters and over 60 journal articles, on topics that include sex, sexuality, and gender, dreams, transference and countertransference, panic attacks, and confabulation in psychosis and brain injury.
