In response to many community requests over the past few years, and in an effort to meet the evolving needs of the student body, Blind Brook Middle School is happy to announce that the BBMS Drama Club has moved forward with bringing forth a musical theater experience to our middle school students for the very first time!  Over 70 students, grades 6-8,  have worked together to bring this production to life either on the stage as performers or as members of the Artistic Design Crew (making props/ painting set) and the Backstage Crew.  The Blind Brook Middle School Drama Club has been in effect since 2006 under the leadership of Allie Kaye Dakers and acts as a vehicle for character education through a collaborative theatrical experience based on the values of commitment, focus, and respect.   This year, our production team bringing HONK! Jr.from the page to the stage consists of three Blind Brook district teachers in the following roles:

Directed/ Produced by Allie Kaye Dakers

Musical Direction by Kaitlin Carey

Choreography by Abby Schwittek

We are deep into our production process and preparing for our performances of HONK! Jr. by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe,  licensed by Music Theatre International.   HONK! Jr., abridged from the original award-winning British production of HONK!, is a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's ‘The Ugly Duckling’ and exemplifies a message of tolerance and accepting differences among individuals.  The story follows a year in the life of the ugly duckling as he navigates his way through bullies at the duck pond, a hungry cat who wants to make a meal out of him, a flock of helpful geese, a bullfrog and his froglets who sing a message of unconditional love, his mother who will not give up on her son, and a host of many other characters that bring the story to vivid life on the stage.

Developing an understanding and passion for the theme of the show has been achieved through group discussion and artwork created at our early ensemble-building rehearsals, which is currently displayed in our guidance office.  The students have expressed that, through this show, we may really have quite a positive effect on all of the students of BBMS and aim to be that positive influence in our community as an ensemble.   Ah, the power of the theater!

In addition to the social impact we hope to have, we believe that our musical theater production of HONK! Jr. enriches the growing artistic culture of our school, provides more opportunities of participation for our student body (45 cast, 25 crew working in various areas, both artistic and backstage), and will hopefully generate a large audience to further promote the arts in our district.   Furthermore, the three-discipline format (acting, singing, and dance) mirrors that of the current high school drama program and is being presented at a developmentally appropriate level for the middle school population to best prepare our students for participation in the performing arts throughout their time in the Blind Brook district.

Tickets are $10.00 General Admission and can be obtained at our Box Office, located outside the BBMS cafeteria Monday, February 6th to Friday, February 9th from 10:45 -12:45pm and also outside the auditorium 1/2 hour prior to the performances on February 10th and 11th.

HONK! Junior, a part of The Broadway Junior Collection, is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Music Theatre International, 421 West 54th Street, New York, NY  10019.
