The League of Women Voters – Rye, Rye Brook & Port Chester will conduct a "Vote 18" workshop on Saturday, January 22, 2100, at the Rye Free Reading Room Community Room, 1061 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY. The workshop is scheduled from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. The Vote 18 workshop is open to League members, community leaders, educators, college and high school students and the general public. The workshop is free of charge.
Vote 18 is an interactive 45-minute program geared to first-time voters that helps them understand the value of their vote, encourages them to register and go to the polls, and get them involved in their communities. Vote 18 takes the form of a fun, fast-paced interactive program and game. Vote 18 teaches participants the history of voting, makes voting relevant in their lives, and engages them in the world of politics. The goal of Vote 18 is to motivate people to register to vote, show them the value of their vote, and motivate them to stay politically engaged over the long-term.
The workshop is an opportunity for our members and others to learn how to lead a Vote 18 program in their school, community center, home or any other appropriate venue. Once the Vote 18 workshop participants are trained as Vote 18 Leaders, the League will assist them in organizing programs throughout our community.

What makes Vote 18 effective is its interactive teaching style and role-playing technique. During one class period, the Leader leads the students through the history of voting, graphically illustrating voting laws and history. Through the dynamics of exclusion, mock elections, group interaction and rewards, players experience the economic and social impacts of voting. Vote 18 makes voting personal. Instead of telling people to vote, they become active participants in the democratic process and teach each other WHY they should vote.
A video of an actual Vote 18 class can be seen at the Vote 18 website, www.vote18.org.
