More about Jonah Winter’s books -
The Founding Fathers: It seems that our Founding Fathers, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay and their cohorts sometimes agreed on NOTHING…except the thing that mattered most: creating the finest constitution in world history, for the brand-new United States of America. Jonah Winter’s book features exceptional illustrations by Barry Blitt and is full of fun history facts for children in grades 2 - 5.
“Fourteen of the men who somehow separated from one country and cobbled together a new one despite their differences are presented in a lively celebration of politics and personalities. Each gets a two-page spread with a full-page portrait (name, sobriquet and dates included) along with a casual, colloquially phrased summary biography and then lots of stats presented briefly and intriguingly: height, weight, political leaning, education, wealth, and religious belief, in addition to hobbies, nickname and position on the Boston Tea Party... Winter addresses the question of ownership of humans directly, noting what his subjects’ expressed views were on slavery as well as which of these early Americans owned slaves. Winter’s folksy narrative manages to give each of the founders both dignity and humanity....Wonderful for future constitutional scholars and other curious young readers. (Kirkus Reviews, STARRED REVIEW November 15, 2014)
Lillian’s Right to Vote is about an elderly African American woman, en route to vote, who remembers her family’s tumultuous voting history in this picture book published in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. “Simple yet powerful, Lillian’s narrative transforms a complex topic into an affecting story suitable for a younger audience, making it a perfect introduction to voting and civil rights. An important book that will give you goose bumps.” —Booklist, starred review. Suitable for grades 1 - 4.
Frida: “Winter, who brought the Mexican muralist vividly to life in Diego, focuses on Diego Rivera’s bride, Frida Kahlo an accomplished artist in her own right in this striking picture book-biography. With a spare narrative more akin to poetry than prose, the author touches on important events in his subject’s childhood Frida’s loneliness and the polio that kept her bedridden for months, as well as a bus accident, at age 18, that nearly killed her. He then shows how, each time, art helped her to transcend her injuries (“She turns her pain into something beautiful”) and to unleash her magically surreal vision of the world in paintings (“In museums, people still look at them and weep and sigh and smile”).” - Publishers Weekly. Suitable for children 4 - 10.
