Quincy The Poodle Needs A GREAT Home!

Quincy is currently being fostered in Harrison with local dog walker Deirdre Curran. He's up for adoption through Cat Assistance of NY.

Meet Quincy.

Quincy is a mini-poodle and he is a FABULOUS little dog. Right now he’s living with me at my apartment in Harrison, NY. He is staying with my own small dog and two cats and gets along very well with everyone here.

He was found about two weeks ago abandoned in a NYC building hallway. Not sure of age, but we don’t think he’s actually old.

Quincy *is* Diabetic, so he needs to live with someone who can handle giving him insulin 2x day, get him extra TLC and lots of opportunities to go outside to relieve himself. Someone experienced in special-needs/senior dog care would be ideal.

Currently Quincy’s eyesight is drastically limited by cataracts and for all intents and purposes he‘s blind but the rescue group has lined up an eye doctor who is going to do eye surgery on him for free and they believe they can restore his sight. Quincy does astonishingly well with his limited eyesight and enthusiastically goes on lengthy walks through Rye Town Park, Crawford Park and the Playland Boardwalk. He‘s also done a walk at Ward Acres in New Rochelle. He loves to be out and about, and especially loves the sunshine. We believe he has some limited vision (probably just shapes and movement) when he is in very bright sunlight. He can be a little less sure of himself when he is in a shady area or when it‘s dark out, but he pretty much has no fear and loves going places. He also loves car rides and is great in the car, very well behaved. Loves sitting in the back seat catching a breeze from the open windows. Quincy is a great companion and he definitely wants to live with someone who will include him in their life and take him places.

Quincy is absolutely house trained and will let his humans know when he needs to go out, but because of the Diabetes right now he needs to urinate frequently and may be prone to urinary accidents simply because he can’t hold it. I keep a male dog diaper/belly band thing around his waist when he’s alone for a couple of hours in the home and during overnights just in case he has an accident. He cannot be expected to go hours and hours left alone without going out. The urinating has already reduced since they started him on Insulin last week and I think as they get him regulated that will improve even more but it’s doubtful that will ever totally clear up because his Diabetes was left untreated for so long, so potential adopters need to understand this and be able to work with him on it.

Quincy is a character and has a great personality. Everyone who meets him falls in love with him instantly. He’s very funny and a SUPER smart little dog. He must have had a great life with someone previously because he knows all about how car rides to the park and the pet store work (he LOVES Pet Pantry Warehouse in Rye!) and he knows “sit”, “lie down”, ‘stay”, “Good Boy” and “Do you wanna go out/for a walk?”. Probably knows other stuff too. His manners in the home are beautiful. He’s playful and energetic on walks and with toys, yet calms down nicely and will sit on the couch with you snuggling for hours. He has a lot of love to give and just wants to soak up the love from his humans.

In his short time with me, he has already figured out the particular turn into my apt. building’s driveway/lot and knows that means we are coming home to eat dinner so when he feels that motion he jumps up in the back seat and gets excited. He’s also learned that “step” means we are going up or down steps and he needs to feel for them. The eyesight doesn’t hold him back. He will learn the ropes very quickly in his new home.

Quincy really is SUPER. Such a sweet dog, and such a GOOD BOY. I can’t say anything bad about him, he’s got a great disposition, loves everybody, loves going on walks, car rides, snuggles on the couch. Good with other dogs, cats, kids. He’s a gem. Someone is going to be very lucky to adopt this dog.

If you or anyone you know is interested in Quincy please contact Cat Assistance to put in an application. We want to find him a forever home that’s as fantastic as he is.
