Rye Sculptor Bob Clyatt to Exhibit and Sell His Work Nov 22-23 at the American Fine Craft Show Brooklyn at Brooklyn Museum: Show Is Part of the New Art of American Craft Museum Series
Sculptor Bob Clyatt, whose studio is in Rye, NY, will exhibit his work at the American Fine Craft Show at Brooklyn Museum

Internationally known sculptor Bob Clyatt whose studio is in Rye, NY, is exhibiting and selling his work at the American Fine Craft Show at Brooklyn Museum November 22-23. “We included sculpture at the craft show to spotlight the interaction and play of form and function in many of the works for sale,” said Richard Rothbard, show and series co-founder and co-director with his wife Joanna Rothbard. “Whether admired for their form and/or function, we’ve selected exhibitors, in addition to ceramists and sculptors, whose glass, furniture, textiles or fashion we recognize for artful execution.”
The sculpture featured here is ”Woman Head on Knee,” Raku-fired stoneware, 15” high x 26” long x 8” wide.
Clyatt wrote: “Whether I’m combining clay with 3-D printing or trying to mash Science and Mystery together into some new sort of theology, it seems I always want to get opposites sparking off each other.” He continued on www.clyattsculpture.com, “Tying everything back to the figure helps me explore modern life in the context of our most ancient human concerns – things like sex, security, freedom, power, thoughtful reflection. I love the legacy of the old figurative sculptors and the challenge of making the figure contemporary.”

The craft show directors have created the “Art of American Craft” museum series, adding, in 2015, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Conn., April 24-26 and Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, N.J. in October to the cornerstone event at Brooklyn Museum, in its second year.
“After last year’s success in Brooklyn, we developed the series to demonstrate the highest level of crafts, featuring works by master craftsman who produce museum-quality work,” said Richard Rothbard. “A museum venue sends the message that visitors should anticipate seeing outstanding examples of ceramics, decorative and wearable fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry and leather apparel handmade by the exhibitors we select. How many museum visitors are aware that much of what they see in exhibitions found its origins in the work of artisanal craftsmen--designers of ceramics, jewelry, furniture, glass and fashion?”

That the work is well displayed is as important to the Rothbards as it is to designers of museum exhibitions. Experts at merchandising--they also own American Craftsman Galleries in Manhattan and Stockbridge, Mass.—they are mindful of presentation when they select artisans. In addition, they have fine-tuned the curation process over 30+ years, visiting thousands of art and craft shows in that period.
The Rothbards founded and directed the American Fine Craft Show NYC, Contemporary Art Fair NYC and the Rockefeller Arts Festival in Manhattan and produce the Berkshires Arts Festival in Mass. in July and Sarasota Craft Show in Florida in December.
