TOWN OF RYE, NY — Rye Town Parks announced new restrictions on non-resident beach access that go into effect beginning next month.

Starting August 1, there will be new beach restrictions in place for Rye Town Beach. Access to the beach will be restricted from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. to season permit holders and residents of Port Chester, Rye Brook, Rye Neck and Rye City only.

Town of Rye officials said the move was made primarily out of safety concerns. The beach stops charging admission after 6 p.m. when lifeguards go off duty and there was starting to be a regular influx of beach visitors around this time each day.

Town Supervisor and Rye Town Park Commission President Gary Zuckerman said that with county-owned Playland Beach next door closed for renovations, staff at the beach suggested the change to help curtail overcrowding when no lifeguards are present.

"Everyone is welcome at the beaches and will continue to be welcome," Zuckerman told Patch. "We have a responsibility to make sure the municipal beaches are safe. Restricting access to residents and pass holders during certain times, including when lifeguards are not present and when overcrowding is a concern."

Zuckerman explained that during holiday weekends when beaches are traditionally restricted to residents and season permit holders, limited parking is also a concern.

The waterfront for swimming and bathing will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6p.m., for everyone (permit or admission fee charged).

The sand will remain open daily from 6 - 8 p.m., for permit holders or residents only. However, no swimming, bathing or wading will be permitted.

Anybody who is already on the beach as of 6 p.m may remain on the beach until clearing time at 8 p.m. The new restriction applies to beach admission only. The park and the parking lot will remain open to all members of the public.

The beach will close and be cleared of all patrons at 8 p.m. daily.

Information about non-resident season permits to allow access to Rye Town Beach for $412 per person or $535 for a family can be found here.
