A 20-year-old West Babylon man was shot to death aboard a Penn Station-bound Long Island Rail Road train in Ronkonkoma around the same time of the morning on Feb. 16.

Police said Yusef Staine was shot by a man who "appeared to be traveling" with him while he was on board a westbound train that was parked at the station at about 1:45 a.m., and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting took place on the 1:51 a.m. train from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station, but the train had not yet begun to travel, and "a male was seen running from the train," Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said.

No one else was injured in the shooting, police said.

Homicide chief Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer told Newsday at the time that the shooting was not random, though it does not appear to be gang-related.

"No other passengers were in danger," he told the outlet, adding that there were only two or three other passengers on the train and they were not in danger. "This appears to be an isolated event. It does not appear to have any connection to any other incidents in the past."

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392, or Crime Stoppers, a confidential police hotline, at 1-800-220-TIPS.
