Brookhaven Notebook: Historic Photos, Sand/Salt Building, SCORE Program

A roundup of news from Suffolk's largest municipality.

Historic photos from the Town of Brookhaven will be on display on the second floor of Town Hall in celebration of Long Island History Month. The photographs will stay until May 27.

According to the town, residents can view them between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or during the Town Board meeting on May 24 starting at 5 p.m. Many of the photos were taken by Arthur S. Greene, a Port Jefferson-based photographer who captured life on the North Shore from the late 19th century up until his death in 1955, the town said.

“This display of historic photographs provides a window back into Brookhaven’s past,” said Supervisor Mark Lesko. “We have such a rich and fascinating history to share through these images and I thank Barbara Russell for making them available for all residents to enjoy.”

“The safety and quality working conditions of our highway employees has always been a top priority and the construction of this new salt/sand structure will continue to guarantee their safety and the safety of the community,” said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent John Rouse. “Councilman [Dan] Panico’s continued willingness and ability to help provide resources to the highway department to continue our improvements are something for which we are extremely grateful.”

Town launches Spay it Forward program

The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter has launched “Spay it Forward”, a program that offers incentives to get animals spayed and neutered, according to the town in a statement it released.

For every Pit Bull that a resident gets spayed or neutered, the owner will receive a voucher to help another needy Pit Bull to receive the same services, the town said.  The Animal Shelter will also be providing free micro-chipping, vaccines and heartworm testing if you get your Pit Bull spayed or neutered.

“This continues Brookhaven’s efforts to find loving homes for Pit Bulls who have been at our shelter for far too long and is made possible through charitable contributions, not taxpayer dollars,” said Lesko.
