FARMINGVILLE, NY — Brookhaven Town is partnering with Dime Bank in sponsoring a recycling drive to help residents properly dispose of unwanted documents and prescription drugs, so that they don't fall into the wrong hands.

The town's council districts hold two yearly recycling events that include paper shredding, e-waste disposal and supervised prescription drug drop-offs. The drives, which are funded by a $4,000 donation from Dime Bank this year, are designed to help residents properly dispose of sensitive documents which can fall into the hands of identity thieves, officials said. They also help residents dispose of e-waste and expired prescription drugs in a manner that is safe for the environment, according to officials .

The recycling drives are open to all town residents for their personal, household material. They are urged to bring the following electronic items to be recycled:

During the recycling drives, documents brought in for shredding will be fed into an industrial shredder, which will make it possible for residents to see the secure destruction of sensitive papers. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags, and documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other objects like staples and rubber bands.
