Doherty Earns All-State Girls Basketball Honor

Sachem East senior Meagan Doherty has been named to the All-State Basketball Team as the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports released the all-star teams Wednesday.

Doherty, already the Suffolk County High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year, earned a spot on the All-State Class AA second team.

Doherty, who helped lead Sachem to the Suffolk County semifinals this year, was named to the All-State fifth team last year.

It's the sixth straight year that a Doherty has been earned All-State honors. Meagan's sister, Kristen Doherty, a sophomore at Boston College, holds the Sachem East scoring record with 2,277 and was named All-State from 2007-10.

As for future All-State teams?

Well, the sportswriters may want to keep holding a sport for a Doherty. East sophomore Katie Doherty, Meagan and Kristen's cousin, was also named All-County this season.
