Sachem East Field Hockey Dominates Ward Melville

Arrows extended unbeaten record with win over rival Patriots.

In a battle of the top two teams in Suffolk County field hockey, Sachem East stayed undefeated and ended Ward Melville’s seven-game win streak with a 4-0 victory Friday evening.

The score was the same as the first meeting between the teams, and Sachem East scored all four of its goals in bunches once again. But this time Sachem jumped out to an early lead and played from in front the whole game instead of waiting until the last 12 minutes to strike.

“I definitely think the girls were ready to play,” Sachem head coach Tina Moon said. “Things that we worked on yesterday were implemented in today’s game. I didn’t expect that outcome but I thought we played really well.”

Katie Doherty scored an early goal on an assist from Katie Trombetta just over five minutes in. Kayla McKeveny followed with a goal on an assist from Jessica Caruana a little more than a minute later to put Sachem up 2-0.

Play evened out for the next six minutes until Kristen Bagley knocked in a loose ball in front after a quick Sachem rush down the field. Caruana was credited with her second assist. Two minutes and five seconds later Sachem scored again on a beautiful feed from McKeveny to Meghan Coope.

“I think they just had the first step on us tonight in the beginning of the game and that caught us a little off guard,” Ward Melville head coach Shannon Watson said. “It’s never easy when you’re scored on that early. It’s just important for us to learn from it and be able to regroup and be able to bounce back if that happens again.”

The loss drops Ward Melville to 9-3 and 8-2 in league play, with both loses to Sachem. The Arrows extended their undefeated season to 11-0 and 9-0 in league play.
