East Wins Battle of Sachems in Boys Track

East and North squared off Wednesday.

On Wednesday the Sachem East and Sachem North boys track teams got together in an epic battle at North’s new track facility.

The ebb and flow of the meet was established in the early going as each team captured early victories in opening events. Sachem North’s Eric D’Alesandro nosed out Sachem East Connor Nee in the long jump. North’s Frank McCabe and Darius Cooper jumped to wins in the pole vault and high jump while Mike Kearns earned North a victory in the shot put.

East’s runners came roaring back as Miles Graves took the 110 hurdles and Ryan Scarpelli won the 1600 meter run. Scarpelli came back almost immediately to follow up Morgan Genoino’s win in the 100 meters with his own victory in the 400 meter run.

North’s Alex Lazarich then took the 800 meter run, while East’s Graves came back to win the 400 hurdles race. In the final two individual running events Genoino blasted to a victory in the 200 meter dash and Zack Patsy turned in a stellar performance with a one second victory in the two mile. News then trickled in that East’s Patrick Bradly had won the discus.

The final field event came down to the wire as Genoino and Eddie Silber finished first and second to give Sachem East some breathing room. As the relays started East knew they needed to win one of the three relays to clinch the meet.

North’s 4 x 800 relay won going away to keep their hopes alive. The next relay brought elation to the East harriers as Scarpelli anchored the East quartet to a startling victory as he ran down and passed the North anchorman in the final 5 meters.

The East 4 x 100 relay then used that momentum to cruise to victory. In a true show of Sachem sportsmanship there were congratulations exchanged between athletes and coaches from both teams on a job well done. This meet certainly exemplified the quality and character of the Sachem athletes and coaches.
