Eight More Mosquito Samples Positive for West Nile in Sachem

The Suffolk County Health Department has announced that 29 more samples of West Nile virus were found in mosquitos throughout the county, including eight in the Sachem community.

According to a recent release distributed by the department, four samples tested positive in Holtsville, two in Farmingville and two in Holbrook. That brings the number of mosquito samples testing positive in Suffolk County this year to 175 as well as 21 birds. So far, there is still only one confirmed human case of the virus, reported by the health department on August 6.  

“Given that the numbers are high and we are finding samples in virtually all parts of the county, we ask that residents be especially vigilant about reducing their exposure to mosquitoes whenever they can,” stated James L. Tomarken, the commissioner of Suffolk County Health Services.

Tomarken suggests that can reduce the mosquito population by eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.

The county offers a bulletin entitled “Mosquitoes and Mosquito-borne Illnesses,” which contains tips on personal protection and repellents.

County health officials also note that dead birds found on area properties may indicate the presence of West Nile virus in the area.
