Farmingville's Kmart branch is one of many across the country that are being made more accessible.
Thanks to a high sum settlement as part of a class action suit filed against the company in 1999 by Carrie Ann Lucas, who is wheelchair-bound and had difficulty shopping at a location in Denver, stores implement ramps and lower counters.
The company said that the improvements would take nearly seven years to complete across the nation in about 1,400 locations. The work crews are currently in Bohemia and will move on to Huntington, Riverhead and West Babylon, along with Farmingville, next.
