Laura Slattery: Why You Should Elect Me to the Sachem School Board
Voters head to the polls on Tuesday.
Submitted by Laura Slattery (School board candidates can submit their own letters to the editor to ryan@patch.com)
My name is Laura Slattery. I am running for a position on the Sachem Board of Education. I have been a Sachem resident for over 43 years. I have been attending Board of Education meetings for many years. I have volunteered my time in many areas of Sachem to try and make a difference for our children.
I know how to have a strong voice and be an advocate when necessary but I also understand the importance of working together to get the job done. My professional background is in business and real estate . I have experienced first hand with my own children how Sachem can offer resources and opportunities for all students.

Over the past few years I have become very concerned with the direction of our district. Sachem now needs a plan for our future. The future board members will need make tough decisions over the next few years. Declining enrollment, financial stress, common core, state testing and a succession plan for senior administrators, are just a few issues our district will be forced to deal with over the next several years.
The Sachem community needs and deserves a long term plan so we can anticipate issues and address the proactively. I want all students to have opportunities and resources to help make them successful in any area the may choose. I want taxpayers to trust that our board is moving forward with fiscal responsibility.

I am running because I love our district, our community and I am willing to work hard and dedicate myself to doing what is best for all. I hope you put your trust in me when you vote on May 19th.
