Meet Author Peter Godwin @ Sachem Library

Celebrate National Library Week, April 10-16!

In The Fear: Robert Mugabe and the Martyrdom of Zimbabwe, Peter Godwin recounts his return to his home country during a period in which dictator Robert Mugabe, refusing to concede power after losing an election, waged a campaign of terror against his own people. The Fear is a book about the astonishing courage and resilience of a people, armed with nothing but a desire to be free. It is also the deeply personal and ultimately uplifting story of a man trying to make sense of the country he can no longer recognize as home. In her NPR review, Susan Jane Gilman said of the book: “The Fear is a visceral masterpiece. It's illuminating, infuriating and informative…The Fear is as important a book as we can read right now.”

Peter Godwin was born and raised in Africa. He studied law at Cambridge University, and international relations at Oxford. He is an award-winning foreign correspondent, author, documentary-maker, and screenwriter. He has taught writing at the New School, Princeton, and Columbia, and he is a 2010 Guggenheim Fellow. His memoir When a Crocodile Eats the Sun won the Borders Original Voices Award, and was selected by American Libraries Association as a Notable Book winner for 2008.

Meet Peter Godwin at the Sachem Public Library on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:00pm, and hear his unforgettable story. All are welcome at this free event. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
