Long Island Weather: Nor'easter Takes Aim At Mother's Day Weekend

Sorry, moms.

If you have outdoor plans with mom this weekend, you are going to need an umbrella. Maybe several of them. A potential nor'easter is taking aim at Long Island and it could wash out most of Mother's Day weekend.

"Confidence is increasing in a soaking windswept rain during the Sat-Sun morning period," the National Weather Service says.

"Forecast models show a cold front stalling over the Tennessee Valley and Mid-Atlantic states late this week. Along this front, a storm system is forecast to develop Thursday before reorganizing off the Mid-Atlantic coast late Friday," according to the Capital Weather Gang.

"The storm is then expected to evolve into a nor’easter, intensifying and charging up the Northeast coast, spreading rain, heavy at times, from Washington to Boston."

"Nor'easter" is the term used to describe heavy winds that develop off the coast. They usually happen during the winter and early spring months, but this one is going to hit in mid-May.

That cold front is also why it's been so chilly — and rainy — lately. The National Weather Service noted the difference we've seen from April to May.

"As low pressure east of New England moves farther out into the open Atlantic, weak high pressure will build in, with dry and cool conditions continuing into Friday," the National Weather Service says. "Strengthening low pressure will then approach from the southwest, bringing rain and wind this weekend."

There is the potential for 1-3 inches of rain in all, along with possible coastal flooding.

"The main rain and wind impacts appear to taper off Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, but windy, cool and unsettled weather may linger into early next week," the NWS says.

It could be worse, though. Parts of Connecticut have seen some snow this week:
