Open Houses Set For Community Engagement On Planning Brookhaven Town's Future
The municipality's Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which focuses on development, has not been updated since 1996.

FARMINGVILLE, NY — Brookhaven Town is jump-starting the first phase of public engagement for the municipality's 30-year-old Comprehensive Land Use Plan update with a series of six open house events in each Council District, officials said.
Officials have began an update, and the workshops are designed to gather input from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to help shape a vision for the town’s future.
The town’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan was adopted in 1996, and since then, officials have completed a number of focused studies over the years, examining the needs, growth, and character of its many communities.

The planning effort brings those together into one coordinated framework that examines both town-wide conditions and priorities, as well as local needs within each of Brookhaven’s six council districts.
The completed plan will address a wide range of topics, including land use, housing, transportation, sustainability, and economic development.

Each open house will offer participants an opportunity to learn about the planning process, share ideas, and identify priorities for the future of their community.
Residents are welcome to attend any of the six sessions, but they are encouraged to participate in the event within their own community to review information tailored to their hamlet and Council District, as well as provide input.
No formal presentation will be given, but attendees may drop in at any time during the scheduled hours to explore materials, speak with project team members, and share feedback through interactive activities.
Supervisor Dan Panico called it an opportunity for everyone who lives, works, owns a business, or has a stake in Brookhaven’s future to make their voice heard.
“The more input we receive, the stronger and more reflective our Comprehensive Plan will be of the people, neighborhoods, and values that make our Town such a diverse and special place,” he said.
The open houses will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at these locations and dates:
- Council District #1 - Wednesday, May 13 - New Village Recreation Center, 20 Wireless Rd, Centereach
- Council District #2 - Thursday, April 23 - Rose Caracappa Senior Center, 739 NY-25A, Mt. Sinai
- Council District #3 - Wednesday, April 22 - Middle Country Public Library, 575 Middle Country Rd, Selden
- Council District #4 - Tuesday, April 28 - Town Hall Auditorium, 1 Independence Hill, Farmingville
- Council District #5 -Tuesday, May 12 - Bayport-Blue Point Public Library, 186 Middle Rd, Blue Point

Residents who can’t attend can still participate online. A community survey and interactive map are available on the project website at planbrookhaven.com, where residents can share comments, and sign up for email updates to stay informed throughout the planning process.
The survey asks participants to share their thoughts on topics such as housing and development; local business and economic opportunities; transportation and mobility; parks, recreation, and open space; waterfronts and environmental resources; infrastructure and public services; and quality of life and community identity.
The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.
Public input gathered through the survey will help shape the vision and goals of the comprehensive plan, which will guide decision-making, investment, and growth across Brookhaven.
