Sachem Speed Continue Pursuit of the Cup

Speed win over Long Beach in a shootout last weekend.

The Sachem Speed, a girls U10 travel soccer team, traveled to Long Beach last Saturday to face the Long Beach Surfettes in Round 2 of the Long Island Cup tournament.

The Speed carried the play in the first half with most of the play on the Long Beach side of the field. The Surfettes hung tough and the first half ended 0-0. The second half was much like the first with the Speed applying the pressure.

The Speed had some opportunities with a few shots that just went wide and a shot that just went over the goal. Meanwhile the Speed defense shut down Long Beach. The second half also ended like the first with a 0-0 tie.

The game them went to a 5 minute sudden death overtime and like most of the game the Speed had the better chances but still couldn't score. A second OT period was played and still no one scored. It would take a shoot out to determine a winner.

This was the first shootout that any of the girls ever played in. With the pressure on, the Speed goaltender made 3 saves and only allowed 1 goal while the Speed scored twice in the shootout, finally winning the game.

Taking nothing away from Long Beach, who never gave up, Speed trainer Nicole Brunder said "What an intense game with sudden death OT and then a shootout. The girls really deserved that win!"

Next up for the Speed in the Long Island Cup is the HBC Red Bulls.
