SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Suffolk County government's websites and emails — including the police department — were offline Thursday night in what officials called a “cyber intrusion,” Newsday reported.
Some county websites could not be accessed and emails bounced back from areas like the highly-trafficked police department's Public Information Bureau, which had been fielding inquiries about a car crash that killed three people in Brookhaven.
Suffolk was coordinating with the state's Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Cyber Incident Response Team, as well as other partner law enforcement agencies, according to a statement the outlet received from Mary Kate Guilfoyle, a spokeswoman for County Executive Steve Bellone.
“The systems will remain offline while we verify and assess the ongoing situation,” she said. "Critical public safety functions such as 911, however, will be maintained."
Patch has reached out to the county executive's office for comment.
