Bayport FD First on Scene to Car vs. Pole Accident

Bayport Fire Department Assistant Chief Bob Fleming woke to the sound of a car crash just before 6 a.m. Thursday morning and upon investigating he came across the scene on Montauk Highway just west of Bayport Avenue.

"I observed a primary electric wire down and burning in front of Carvel and looked to the left and saw a one-car accident and pole cracked at the base," he told Patch in an email.

Chief Fleming radioed in the accident to dispatcher Jeanette Thorn who proceeded to activate the Fire Department which responded and secured the vehicle. The incident was under the command of Bayport's Chief of Department Ryan Tomassone.

Community Ambulance arrived on the scene to evaluate the driver who refused medical attention, Fleming told Patch.

LIPA  was requested and arrived a short time later and secured the power in the area.

The Fire Department extinguished the small fire where the primary line was on the ground and all units were cleared to return, said Fleming.

According to the fire department, the highway area will be shut down until LIPA can replace the pole and wires.

Patch sincerely thanks Assistant Chief Bob Fleming and the fire department for providing greater information regarding the crash.
