Blue Point Brewing Staff Volunteer To Fight Invasive Plants

The team rolled up their sleeves and helped remove invasive phragmites at West Brook, a key Long Island conservation site.

On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, staff from Blue Point Brewing Co., a member of Seatuck’s Corporate Conservation Program, put on their work boots, rolled up their sleeves and helped remove invasive phragmites (common reed) at West Brook. The brook is a major tributary of the Connetquot River and one of the most botanically rich sites on Long Island. If left unchecked phragmites could shade and crowd out its unique native plants and habitat.

The restoration of West Brook has been one of Seatuck’s top conservation priorities since 2019, when a dam at the site failed, allowing the artificial pond behind it to drain. For the first time in over 100 years, the brook resumed its natural flow from its headwaters in Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park down to the tidal reaches of the Great South Bay. It is now one of only a few free-flowing streams on Long Island. West Brook has great ecological potential as a place where migratory fish and other native riverine species can return to call this special place home once again.

“We are so grateful to the Blue Point Brewing staff for helping remove invasive plants from the site.” said Enrico Nardone, Seatuck’s Executive Director. “Their hard work is making a real difference by enabling rare plant species to flourish and preserving valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
