We are joining forces with our friends at New Hour for Women and Children to write letters to people in prison and jail on August 21st at 7pm.
We also have all the supplies you need to write a letter- pads of paper, pens, envelopes and stamps.
Why write letters to people in prison. The United States is unparalleled historically and ranks among the highest worldwide in its dependence on incarceration. (Over 2 million people in state and federal prisons and jails). Over five million people in total are under supervision by the criminal legal system. Of these, nearly two million people, disproportionately Black people, are living in prisons and jails instead of their communities. People in prison are people from our communities and deserve support, consideration and communication with the outside world. This event is free.

This event is co-sponsored by New Hour for Women and Children. New Hour for Women and Children was founded to provide meaningful support to current and formerly incarcerated women, their children and families. We build community to promote successful re-entry and lasting reintegration, and to reform unjust criminal justice system policies. We empower directly impacted people to utilize their lived experiences to create lasting reforms to the carceral system.

About the author: Effie Kammenou believes it’s never too late to follow your heart—and her romantic fiction reflects that belief. A first-generation Greek-American, Effie writes contemporary romance and women’s fiction infused with Greek culture, family traditions, and emotionally layered love stories.
After working in the optical field for over forty years while raising her two daughters, Effie published her debut novel, Evanthia’s Gift, in 2015. Inspired by her mother and her family’s journey from Lesvos, Greece, to America, the book launched The Gift Saga, a multigenerational women’s fiction trilogy centered on love, loss, and legacy. Her interview with her father—who shared stories of their family’s past until his passing at age 100—was later published in the nationally circulated magazine Reminisce.
Effie is the award-winning author of The Gift Saga and The Meraki Series, including Love Is What You Bake of It, Love by Design, and Love Is Worth Fighting For, with Love in Plain Sight set to complete the series. Each romance follows a sibling navigating love, ambition, and the expectations of a deeply involved Greek family, while a mystery tied to real Greek history unfolds across the series.
Her novels have been finalists and winners in the Readers’ Favorite Book Awards, International Book Awards, and BookFest Awards. As a special bonus, many of her romances include traditional Greek recipes featured throughout the story—most passed down from her Athenian mother.
Her latest novel, The Magic of Robola, is a swoon-filled second-chance romance told across dual timelines and set in Greece, recently released on January 30, 2026.
Effie lives on Long Island and is a member of Romance Writers of America, Women’s Fiction Writers Association, and several regional author organizations

The Jay Heritage Center in Rye, New York will celebrate America at 250 with a toast to Jay Medal honorees Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annette Gordon-Reed, the Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard University and award-winning Lincoln historian Harold Holzer.
The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy. Honorees are selected for their excellence in the fields of American history, environmental stewardship, social justice or civic engagement.
Joining the celebration will be Chief Judge of the State of New York and the New York Court of Appeals, Honorable Rowan D. Wilson and historian and philanthropist Elihu Rose who will present the awards at JHC's annual Soirée. Special guests will include David Blight, Frank Cogliano, Joanne Freeman, and Beverly Gage.

The 44th Annual WICC Surfside Hotel <a href="https://www.bluefishtournament.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth</a> returns to Long Island Sound on Saturday, August 29, with fishing officially beginning at 12:01 a.m. Anglers from New York and Connecticut will compete for bragging rights—and a $25,000 grand prize awarded to the tournament's largest bluefish.
The weekend-long tournament features more than $40,000 in total cash prizes, including:
<ul><li>1st Place: $25,000</li><li>2nd Place: $7,500</li><li>3rd Place: $2,500</li><li>Smaller cash prizes awarded through 20th Place</li><li>Port Prizes awarded for the heaviest bluefish weighed at each official Connecticut and New York weigh station (see below for complete list of weigh stations)</li></ul>
Young anglers, 17 and under, will also have the chance to win big. The tournament will award a $1,000 cash prize to the largest bluefish caught by a youth angler. Second and third place youth winners will receive $100 gift cards.
