EMTs Honored For Assisting In Unexpected Home Birth
The group of local EMTs sprung into action after a Sayville mother unexpectedly went into labor and gave birth in her home last month.

SAYVILLE, NY - A group of local EMTs were honored recently for safely helping to deliver a newborn baby at a Sayville home last month. On Sept. 23, members of the Community Ambulance Company of Sayville responded to a call in the afternoon after a local man called to say his wife was in labor.
The paramedics arrived quickly and rushed to check on the mother. A few minutes later, after a long contraction and just one push, a baby boy was born. Both the mother and baby were taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. Luckily both were healthy after the quick, unexpected labor.
Last week, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, paid tribute to local EMTs for the safe at-home delivery.

Paramedics Melissa Blom; EMT Daniel Schappert; EMT Linda Kornreich and EMT Kate Apostolico were honored, along with two others who could not attend, EMT Michael Corrigan and Jordan Zanetti were recognized in a special ceremony.
"I’d like to commend this group of paramedics for recognizing imminent delivery and demonstrating their true professional expertise by remaining calm, in what is probably one of the most stressful situations a provider can face," Carpenter said. "Being part of delivering a baby in the field is probably one of the most rewarding experiences to have. Congratulations to this group of EMTs on an outstanding job."
