The Irish Potato Famine and Immigration to America at the Connetquot Public Library
The library will host a special presentation on Wednesday, September 23 from 7:00-8:30pm. Tom O’Reilly, Ancient Order of Hibernians History, Culture and Traditional Committee chairperson presents the history and culture of his native Ireland. Connecting Americans their Irish heritage, he discusses, An Gorta Mor, (the Great Hunger 1845-1852 also known as the potato famine). He will discuss the time spent with family and friends before departure (referred to as the American wake); the time spent crossing the Atlantic in unsafe ships, life in the big city and their rise in America.
