FBI Special Agent Gives Bayport-Blue Point HS Students Inside Look at Bureau Work

Special agent details investigations, career paths, and what students need to succeed in federal law enforcement.

BAYPORT, NY — Students in government, politics, economics, and law classes at Bayport-Blue Point High School got a firsthand look at federal law enforcement when a special agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New York City Field Office visited on March 31.

The agent outlined the FBI’s key priorities, including counterterrorism, counterintelligence and cybersecurity. Students learned about the wide range of investigations the agency handles, from white-collar crime and civil rights violations to organized crime, violent gangs, healthcare fraud and financial crimes.

The discussion also highlighted major FBI services, including Criminal Justice Information Services and the FBI Laboratory — one of the largest and most comprehensive crime labs in the world. The agent also introduced the bureau’s Operational Technology Division and its role in developing innovative tools to support intelligence, national security and law enforcement efforts.

The agent highlighted the importance of making responsible life choices for those interested in pursuing a career in federal law enforcement, including avoiding drug use and maintaining a positive social media presence. He also shared information about opportunities for students and recent graduates, such as the FBI Teen Academy and the FBI Honors Internship Program.

Students were given an overview of the many career paths available within the FBI, including positions as special agents, intelligence analysts, IT specialists, forensic biologists, forensic accountants, and linguists, as well as roles in human resources, legal, medical, and counseling fields.
