Long Island Woman Who Collected Money for Cancer Walk Kept It For Herself: Police

Police are looking for other victims. The woman is also accused of trying to rob a gas station at gunpoint.

A Long Island woman solicited sponsor donations for a cancer walk, but then altered the checks given to her and cashed them without donating the money to the charity, Suffolk Police said Monday night.

Jaime Jewler, 41, was arrested at her home on Sayville Avenue in Bohemia at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, police said. Jewler is also accused of attempting to rob a gas station at gunpoint.

According to police, Jewler collected donations for the cancer walk on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9. Two weeks later, on Nov. 25 at about 10:50 a.m., she entered the Gulf gas station located at 4909 Sunrise Highway in Bohemia, displayed what appeared to be a handgun and demanded money, police said. The attendant was able to wrestle the gun away from Jewler, who then fled, police said.
