Man Killed After Jeep Overturns, Catches Fire in Bayport

Accident occurred on the Sunrise Highway service road Sunday afternoon.

A 49-year-old East Patchogue man was killed after his Jeep overturned and then caught fire in Bayport Sunday afternoon.

According to police, Michael Schuierer was driving his 1970 Jeep east on Sunrise Highway South Service Road, just west of Nicolls Road, when he lost control of the vehicle at about 12:15 p.m.

Two good Samaritans attempted to free Schuierer from the overturned vehicle but they were overwhelmed by flames before they could pull him out, police said.

Schuierer was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.

The accident occurred about two hours after another fatal crash just a couple miles west on Sunrise. In that crash, a motorcyclist was killed when he crashed into a guardrail.
