Officials Unveil New 'Avenue Of Heroes' At Future Museum

The road leading to the future LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum included a memorial to the fallen of Operation Red Wings.

WEST SAYVILLE, NY - The new LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum and Sea Cadet Training Facility in West Sayville officially revealed its new "Avenue of Heroes" last week. The ceremony last Tuesday included a ribbon cutting and sign unveiling.

In addition, guests got a first look of the future museum’s layout and content. The newly constructed Avenue of Heroes is a road that leads to the entrance to the facility. It is located off of West Avenue on the Grounds of Charles Dominy County Park, next to the Long Island Maritime Museum. Completion.

The road is the fourth milestone in the construction of the new museum, expected to open in spring 2020.

The new road is lined with a total of 20 Red Maple trees in honor of 19 fallen and the one survivor of Operation Red Wings.

The tree were dedicated to the each of the Navy SEALs and Army Night Stalkers killed on June 28, 2005 in the mountains of Afghanistan. There was only one survivor. A 20th tree was planted to honor the survivor as well.

Each tree features a plaque inscribed with the name, rank, branch of service, and dates of birth and passing of the fallen.

Last week, the dedication ceremony for the road began with remarks from Vincent Calvano, a Board Member of the Museum as well as its Director of Construction.]

In addition, County Executive Steve Bellone and Legislator William Lindsay III followed with their own speeches speaking about the Avenue of Heroes and the Museum itself.

After Daniel J. Murphy, Gold Star Father and Chairman of the Board of The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum said a few words, he led everyone outside, to the Avenue of Heroes.

Then Sea Cadets from the LT Michael P. Murphy division of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corp raised the American flag, the same flag that had been raised over the USS Michael Murphy at the US Navy Destroyer's christening.

Afterwards the Avenue of Heroes sign was unveiled and the official ribbon cutting to open the road was performed.
